Paul Walker tragically passed away on Saturday in a fiery car crash in Southern California.
The 40-year-old Fast & Furious actor was the passenger in a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT that was being driven by his friend and former race car driver Roger Rodas. The car allegedly slammed into a light pole or tree and burst into flames. The Sheriff’s Department believes speed was a factor, however an exact cause has yet to be determined.
TMZ first broke the news of the accident and the site’s Mike Walters phoned in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest on Monday morning and revealed that when TMZ first got the call on Saturday, they had hoped it wasn’t true.
Mike goes on to say that considering both Paul and Roger were “world class drivers,” news is surfacing that the car may have malfunctioned. ”What we know so far is that it’s possible this car malfunctioned,” he explains. “There is evidence of steering fluid leak on the ground where they started to lose control.”
Mike also says that the tire marks on the road also point towards malfunction. ”If Roger were out of the control, you would see the marks, but instead it’s a straight line in to where they crashed.”
Unfortunately, Mike adds, it’s clear “they were racing … Paul liked racing. He was into it and he was into fast cars.”
Paul had been at an event for his charity Reach Out Worldwide before deciding to take the car out for a drive. The fundraiser, which benefited victims of Typhoon Haiyan, was taking place in a race car shop near the crash scene.
Walker leaves behind his family, including 15-year-old daughter Meadow.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Paul and Roger’s families.
