(East Syracuse. NY) Nearly a year after Village residents voted to keep the East Syracuse police department, a budget is approved that raises property taxes by 22 percent. Mayor Robert Tackman says the majority of the increase will cover rising pension and healthcare costs, a large portion of which are for the police department. Now, some residents are rethinking last year's vote and Tackman says the possibility of consolidating the police and county sheriff's departments will be discused later this year. Other department cuts will also be discussed. There are no layoffs in 2013-14 Village budget.
Mayor Tackman says had the East Syracuse police department been eliminated last year it would have saved roughly 2 dollars on every thousand of assessed value. This new budget increases the tax to $16.41 per thousand, effective June 1st. That's a tax bill of $291 for a home valued at 100-thousand dollars.
