Utica police say the remains of a young child found in the Mohawk River earlier this month have been positively identified.
Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Hauck says the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office positively identified the remains as those of Baby Levon Wameling, who was first reported missing in June. Hauck says extensive DNA testing confirmed Baby Levon's identity, but he says no cause of death has been determined as yet. Hauck says the department continues to investigate the case.
The child's father, Jevon Wameling, has not been charged in the case but police say he is a person of interest. He was recently charged with burglary after breaking into a relative's home. It was Wameling who reported the child missing, but only after waiting two weeks and consulting an attorney first.
