The spring turkey hunting season is set to begin this week in New York.
State conservation authorities say the birds will be fair game everywhere but in New York City and Long Island starting on Wednesday and running until May 31. An estimated 100,000 hunters participate each spring. The Department of Environmental Conservation says hunters will need a permit as well as a small game hunting or sportsman license and use only shotguns or handguns loaded with shot or a bow and arrow.
Hunting hours are from 30 minutes before sunrise until noon. The take is limited to two bearded turkeys for the season and only one per day.
