Syracuse police tell us they stopped a bicyclist on Bellevue Avenue and recovered a loaded handgun.
Officers say they heard a 911 call dispatched about possible shots fired near South Avenue and Brighton Street. Enroute, they heard a call describing a possible suspect on a bicycle. They saw a bicyclist matching the description and stopped them. Officers found a loaded .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun, and arrested the male suspect.
The suspect was identified as 18-year-old Donnell Thornton of Liverpool. Thornton was charged with criminal possession of a weapon. He is at the Justice Center awaiting arraignment in city criminal court. Police say Thornton was not involved in the original shots-fired call.
