Cashless Toll Booths Get Funding; Upgrade To Be Finished By End Of 2020

Cashless toll booths will become a reality in New York State. The funding for the project has been approved according to Governor Andrew Cuomo. The State will be investing $355 million into the upgrade.

In cashless toll booths, a driver will no longer pull up to the booth to pay an attendant the toll amount. Instead, drivers will pass under a gantry which will read the driver’s EZ Pass or the car’s license plate number. Those without an EZ Pass will be billed for the toll amount. Furthermore, driving under the gantry will allow the driver to drive faster than the 5 miles per hour required at the toll booths.

According to the state, all 52 Thruway Interchanges and barriers will be cashless by the end of 2020.
