If a child shows up at your door this Halloween with a blue pumpkin to collect his/her candy in, it is for a very good reason. The child carrying the pumpkin has autism and may be non-verbal and cannot say “trick-or-treat.”
The idea came about from a Facebook post by Omairis Taylor, that has since gone viral, where she explains that her 3 year old son has non-verbal autism and cannot say the appropriate words. She had to explain it over and over again last year to people who would wait for her son to say “trick-or-treat” before giving out the candy.
Taylor explains the situation on her Facebook page, which is normally private, Taylor finished the post with: “P.S. I have made this post public in hopes you will share and get the BLUE BUCKET message out there for Autusm Awareness this Halloween.”
The message worked with over 120,000 shares! Plus Autism Speaks has also recommended that autistic children carry blue buckets. So if you see a child come to your door with a blue bucket, help alleviate their stress and just drop the candy in the bucket without waiting for the magical Halloween words. The parent will be extremely grateful for your consideration!
