Five time NBA championship winner under the Laker’s late Dr. Jerry Buss, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, phoned in to ”On Air with Ryan Seacrest” to share with us his thoughts on how Dr. Buss created a successful environment as well as a family dynamic within the whole team.
Kareem shared: “As the person with vision and putting the right people in place, he could take all the credit if you’re going to start at the very top with ownership because he realized he was not a genius at basketball he let Pete Newell and Jerry West and Bill Sharman have the reins and backed them and look what happened we went to the World Championship eight times in ten years and we won five. Not bad.”
The retired pro also revealed Dr. Buss wasn’t all business, sharing: “Any number of times when it got be we could hang and it got to be about family…it was always about the group and he felt that we should be like family and he tried to make that happen.”
However, overall, Kareem explains Jerry’s successful career stems from: “He knew how to delegate responsibility and power, that’s the key. You can’t do it all yourself.”
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Buss and Laker family.
