Halloween is right around the corner. I’m always so last minute in putting together my costume. I sort of resent it actually. Dressing up should be fun and stress free. Here are three things you should do to ensure that your costume is one-of-a-kind this year!
1. Create a Halloween Mood Board
To prevent that last minute, panic-stricken feeling that overcomes my body when picking out my costume I decided to seek help from my every day style icons – the celebs, of course. Tear through your favorite magazines, blogs and Pinterest boards to find an esthetic worth following. Your inspiration doesn’t have to come from Halloween a costume. Look to today’s latest trends too to make your costume feel modern and unique. Skulls are everywhere this year so I was able to find a ton of inspiration to help me complete my look.
Last year Debra Messing and Daniel Zelman painted their faces for Bette Midler’s annual New York Restoration Project’s Hulaween event. Debra’s floral headpiece is a great twist on a fashion trend.
Helena Bonham Carter always looks like she stepped out of a Tim Burton movie. I particularly love her as Bellatrix LeStrange in the Harry Potter series. This witchy garb kept my creative juices flowing.
Few do it better than Gaga. Her epic skeleton make-up from her Born This Way music video came to my mind right away.
2. Shop Til You Drop…Dead
Halloween doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming. Anyone can go to a local party store and buy a prepackaged costume. Instead, scour your favorite thrift store or flea market for authentic and vintage pieces. Even some of my favorite brands like Urban Outfitters and Top Shop are getting in the spirit and housing Halloween shops. I find that when I shop for Halloween at stores that I normally shop at, I’m more inclined to wear my purchases (within reason) more than once.
3. Sit back, relax and have a gouling good time.
